Weather Summary for The Chronicle
By: Jeremy Davis, North Country Weather
Last Week's Weather Recap (March 5th - March 11th)
The past week has continued the trend of below normal temperatures and below normal precipitation which has dominated the North Country since the middle of February. Only 0.11 inches of melted precipitation occurred during the past week, well below than average of about 0.80 inches. Temperatures averaged between five and seven degrees below normal, and included a record low temperature on the 07th.
On Wednesday the 05th, some light rain fell during the morning, mixed with sleet (and some snow in the southeastern Adirondacks). The rest of the day was cloudy, with near normal highs in the middle to upper 30's. A sharp arctic cold front moved through the Lake George Saratoga region Wednesday night, ushering in bitterly cold air for Thursday the 06th, with daytime highs only in the teens with brisk winds. The winds slackened off Thursday night, allow temperatures to drop to below zero before midnight, and to eight degrees below zero in Glens Falls during the morning of Friday the 07th. This tied the record for the date, and brought our March total of below zero days to four, tied for the most ever for the month. This also brought our seasonal total to thirty six days, also tying for the most ever for the winter season.
Temperatures later Friday did recover into the middle 20's, but was still significantly below normal. Much of the weekend of the 08th and 09th was mild as compared to recent cold, with partly sunny skies recorded on Saturday with highs in the upper 30's over the hills and near 40 in the valley. A sharp cold front plunged into the region on Sunday, ushering in much colder air. Early morning highs near 40 fell to the 20's by afternoon.
Monday the 10th was the coldest day in about two weeks, with highs only in the upper teens, and lows in the lower single digits. This would have been cold for January! Warmer air did move into the area on Tuesday the 11th, with highs near 30 in the hills and lower 30's near Glens Falls.
The Week Ahead (March 13th - March 19th)
Typically, average highs climb rapidly during the next week, from 40 on March 13th to 43 on March 19th. Lows also rise, from 21 on March 13th to 24 on the 19th. Precipitation averages about 0.80 inches, with 2-3" of snow. Also, snow on the ground typically begins a steady melt over the next week, and is usually gone in valley areas by April 01st.
All long range indications are suggesting that winter's brutal icy grip will finally let go over the week, bringing with it normal to above average temperatures, and likely below average precipitation. This will help to steadily melt our significant snowpack which is still near two feet in the mountains. In order to avoid major flooding this spring, we must have mild days and below freezing nights with relatively dry weather for the next several weeks. This looks to be in the offing at least over the next week.
As for the weather, a storm system is expected to pass south of the upper Hudson Valley on Thursday the 13th, producing little more than clouds in our area. Highs will be near freezing with lows in the teens, and will likely be the coldest temperatures. Mostly sunny skies are expected on Friday the 14th, with highs from 35 in the hills to near 40 in Glens Falls. Even warmer weather is expected for Saturday the 15th, with highs in the middle 40's and lows near 20.
On Sunday the 16th, a weak front may kick off a shower, but skies should be partly cloudy, with highs finally reaching the 50s for most of the area. This would be the warmest temperature since the middle of November! The warm weather continues into Monday the 17th, however this time under cloudy skies with a few showers. Highs should be near 50 with lows in the 30's.
Tuesday the 18th and Wednesday the 19th should feature partly cloudy skies with highs of 45 to 55, and lows in the lower to middle 30's.
