December marks the beginning of winter and wintertime recreation across the North Country. Ski areas are making snow, temperatures have dropped significantly, and ponds and lakes begin to freeze over.
Average highs fall from the upper 30’s to near 30 F through the
month (4 to 0 C), with average lows falling from the lower 20’s to the lower
teens F (-6 to -12 C). A day or two of highs near 60F (16C) is possible, though highs may also be in the teens
(-7 to
-12 C) by the end of the month. Temperatures have also fallen into the minus 20’s
F (-29 to -34 C), and a day or two of below zero F weather is
common (lower than -17 C), particularly if snow is present.
A little more than a foot (31cm) of snow falls on average, however, more snow can fall in some years, and others may see little snowfall. Much of these snowfalls occur behind fronts, or in an occasional coastal system.
