EL NINO
During El Nino years, high temperatures were average to below average for all nine cities. Binghamton had the greatest departure below normal at -0.5 degrees, with Glens Falls and Albany being the two cities with near average temperatures.
For low temperatures during El Nino years, the range was more vast. There were two cities (Boston and Concord) averaging -0.1 degrees below average, two cities (Buffalo and Binghamton) with near average lows, and the remainder of locations with above normal temperatures. Of these, Albany was the warmest with 0.6 degrees above average lows. Glens Falls, New York City, and Portland, Maine had the same departure from average, at 0.3 degrees warmer. It is likely that an increase of cloudiness leads to nighttime lows being warmer.

All of the cities studied showed that above normal amounts of
precipitation occur during El Nino years. Portland had the greatest positive departure with 1.72 inches above normal, followed by Boston with 1.29 inches above normal. Buffalo had the smallest positive departure, averaging just 0.13 inches more than normal.
El Nino snow years also average above normal for all nine cities. The data ranges from New York City having 0.3 inches more to Concord having 6.2 additional inches. Glens Falls generally has 4.2 inches more during El Nino years while Albany has 3.4 inches more and Burlington has 1.8 inches.
